Stress Reduction
Stress reduction is perhaps, the most common reason for a person to seek acupuncture treatments. Today, most people carry around a high level of stress caused by the demands of the 21st century. Stress that we face in our day-to-day lives--whether it is from pressures of work, family, money, interpersonal relationships or environment--can show up in the body. Hence, the incidence of stress-induced illnesses is rising exponentially and manifesting itself in diseases ranging from migraine headaches and insomnia to iatrogenic diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome. Stress is also often sited as the reason for someone to smoke or abuse alcohol. Additionally, stress can also lead to depression, anxiety or more acute mental illnesses.
Acupuncture works for stress and stress-related illnesses by settling the emotions through the insertion of needles into specific points along the meridians most often affected by stress.
An example of one of the many points treated during stress reduction is called Nei Guan (PC-6) pictured below.

Increased Energy
Acupuncture is an effective tool that increases a sense of vitality and energy within a person. Often times, when vital energy is blocked or stagnant, the body responds by becoming more sluggish and achy. Acupuncture releases this energy to enliven all organs and tissues, which in turn, increases overall vitality, aids in better digestion, releases pain and relaxes tension.
ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that affects children. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology (AACAP), ADHD affects 10% of boys and 5% of girls.
Symptoms include:
Being easily distracted
Procrastination
Inattentiveness in class
Impulsivity
Short-term memory loss
Problems organizing ideas and concepts
Traditional treatment for ADHD has primarily been the drug Ritalin. However, the side-effects of Ritalin, according to the Physician’s Desk Reference, are suppression of growth in height or weight, nervousness and insomnia. These side-effects are the main reason why parents of ADHD children are turning to acupuncture as an alternative to this drug and other medications. Since the 1980’s, clinical trials regarding acupuncture and the treatment of ADHD have shown remarkable results. Acupuncture can be used as an adjunctive treatment to help children with the side-effects of Ritalin or it can be used as an alternative therapy all on its own.
